I'm looking at getting into cycling, using it for back and forth to work, and possibly a triathlon this summer. I don't want to spend much more than $800 USD.

There is nothing wrong with a Schwinn bike bought at a bike shop. just stay away from the ones sold at department stores.
If you have a 31-32 inch inseam a Forge cst 1000 is a great bike for less then $400.

Don't get Schwinn... pleeeeeease don't! In cycling you get what you pay for. You want to go for a brand that has a long lasting and well built foundation in the cycling market.
I would recomment Trek, Specialized and Bianchi.
If you want a slightly cheaper brand go for Trek (still great bikes), if you want mass produced but still reliable go for specialized, if you want a bit more style and engineering quality go for Bianchi.
Look on the second hand market! Ebay is great :) Just remember, you get what you pat for; an expensive bike is an investment that will last years; a cheap bike will be run into the ground within a few years.
