What are the chances of my bicycle getting damaged via transportation on a plane?

A friend & I are flying back from Frankfurt nxt week after a short cycling holiday & we're wondering what the chances are of our bicycles getting damage when being handled & placed among other luggage on board the plane etc? Also, I know that you need to put your bicycle in a bag or narrow box, do the airline supply these or would I have to purchase them from somewhere? Cheers all:-)

Pack it properly, and put all the removable parts in your other luggage. If you can, pack bubblewrap and plenty of cardboard around forks, springs, gears and reas shock (assuming you have full suss, not a racer.)

Should be OK, but the other answers are correct, you will need a shipping box there... and back ! So find out if you can store it someplace for the flight home. Get extra insurance too.
