My wife is also considering a road bike, and the Specialized Allez Comp can be had on sale for about $1300, while the Allez Elite retails for $1100.
The differences are the Comp has FULL Shimano 105 and Mavic wheels, whereas the Elite has a Tiagra/105 component mix (lower quality) and Alex wheels (essentially heavy no-name hoops.
For the $200 price difference, you would have to spend about $800 more for the same components.
I agree with the other guy- Felt has good bang for your buck, and make very nice bikes. Generally speaking, look for name brand wheels and as much105/Ultegra componentry as you can, but in the end you need to get the bike that feels good and fits YOU the best.
